Flowers, chocolates, and heartfelt cards are always appreciated on Mother’s Day, but what our moms really want is more time with us! After you shower your Mom with gifts, get that popcorn popping and settle in for a movie or two. These picks are some of our favorite films that depict the complicated relationships between moms and daughters. Sure, it can get messy sometimes, but our moms always have our backs and we love them for that!
If you haven’t heard of this film, you’ve been snoozin’! In Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, Saoirse Ronan plays the titular character, a high school student who’s dealing with the highs and lows of suburban life. She has big dreams to pursue college in New York City, and her mother Marion (beautifully played by Laurie Metcalf) isn’t exactly thrilled with the idea. The authenticity of the mother-daughter relationship in this film is… well 100% on point. It’s a thoughtfully crafted coming of age story, and if you’re watching it with Mom you’ll definitely need a box of tissues on hand.
The soundtrack! The outfits! Cher’s hair! This classic 1990 comedy-drama stars Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci (in her first role) as the daughters of an eccentric mother named Rachel. Set in the early 60s in small town America, this movie will tickle your Mom’s nostalgia while keeping you thoroughly entertained. Also, seeing Cher play Mom to Winona and Christina is everything!
We love this underdog story about Akeelah Anderson (played by Keke Palmer), an 11-year-old spelling enthusiast who lives with her widowed Mom, and siblings in Los Angeles. Her passion and tenacity are inspiring, and when the movie was first released in 2006 critics were blown away by Keke’s performance (it was her first lead in a film). With Angela Basset and Laurence Fishburne in supporting roles, this is a feel good flick that will leave you feeling full of love.
