After his stunning defeat of Amir Khan in last year’s Cinco de Mayo match, 26-year-old “Canelo” Alvarez has enjoyed the prestigious title of “King of the Ring” with a record of 48 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. But Canelo may find his reign short-lived.

Enter Julio Cesar Chavez, a 31-year-old challenger and native of Mexico who not only wants to take his King of the Ring title, but also wants to dethrone Canelo as Mexico’s best fighter. He’s got the strength and the stats with 50 wins, 2 ties, and 1 loss,  but with weight issues riddling past weigh-ins and a positive drug test on his record, many in the sport are wondering whether Chavez can rise to the occasion.

This match is more than just a fight, it’s a civil war. As Oscar de La Hoya said, “I call it a civil war because both fighters are Mexican.” The Mexican people’s loyalties have pitted father against son, and brother against brother.

To put it all in perspective, Chavez is the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., and has been in the public eye for years—old school boxing fans are definitely on his side. But Canelo is new blood and the current reigning champion! He grew up in Jalisco, Guadalajara, and many Mexicans saw him rise to the top.
