The star power in Big Little Lies will draw you in, but it’s the story that will hold your attention. Originally conceived as a film adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel “Big Little Lies,” the new HBO® series is about three mothers whose superficially perfect lives shockingly descend into murder. But trust us, if you’ve already read the book, there are still plenty of reasons to watch the HBO® version.

Showrunner and series writer, David E. Kelley, has slightly altered the narrative, and has moved the action from Australia to Monterey, California. This moneyed location serves as the backdrop for some cutthroat competition between residents, as they jockey for social position through subtle displays of wealth and status. But underneath all this pomp and circumstance is a dark secret.

Watch the official trailer for Big Little Lies below, and get a taste for its gripping combination of dark comedy and drama. The trailer also gives brief glimpses of the cinematic excellence of the show’s director, Jean-Marc Vallée, who directed all seven episodes. Vallée is best known for directing Dallas Buyers Club, which won Mathew McConaughey an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Tune in to HBO® at 9/8c on February 19th for the premiere of Big Little Lies—it just might push you over the edge.
