While many a child of the ’80s was content with original Escape From New York starring Kurt Russell, Hollywood has increasingly attempted to squeeze more cash from classic films and John Carpenter’s 1981 hit is no different.

Deadline today is reporting that famed producer Joel Silver has acquired the rights to the dystopian tale of the one-eyed former soldier, Snake Plisskin, as he attempts to rescue the President from the island of Manhattan, which has been turned into a maximum-security prison. The site reports that Silver is aiming to go beyond a single film and hopes to establish a trilogy.

While no one has been cast, Gerard Butler and Jeremy Renner were both rumored for the role of Snake when talks of an Escape From New York remake surfaced a couple years ago.
